Psalm 148 invites not just people but all of creation — stars, oceans, mountains, and animals — to praise God. Our part in that cosmic song is to live as we were made to live: with kindness, truth, and care for the world.
A Song for Everything God Made
Today's Psalm — Psalm 148 — is a song, but it's not just a song for people. It's a song for everything that God made.
Praise the Lord from the heavens. Praise him, sun and moon; praise him, all shining stars. And then praise the Lord from the earth — you great sea creatures, fire and hail, mountains and hills, fruit trees and animals, wild and tame.
It's like the whole universe is invited to sing together. Stars, oceans, animals, mountains, clouds, people — everyone and everything joining in one giant song of praise.
How Does Creation Praise God?
Of course, the stars and the oceans don't have voices like we do. So how do they praise God?
They do it by being exactly what God made them to be.
- The sun praises God by shining.
- The trees praise God by growing and giving oxygen.
- The rivers praise God by flowing and bringing life.
- The birds praise God by flying and singing.
And we praise God — not just when we sing in church, but when we live the way we were meant to live. When we show kindness. When we care for the earth. When we tell the truth. When we use our gifts to help others.
Part of Something Much Bigger
Psalm 148 reminds us that we are part of something so much bigger than ourselves. We're part of this whole living, breathing world that God loves — a world that's alive with praise. And our job is to join in, not to drown it out.
Sometimes people think worship is only what happens in church, but Psalm 148 says the whole universe is worshipping all the time.
Every sunrise is a prayer. Every drop of rain is an offering. Every act of love is a kind of praise.
Listen for the Song
So maybe this week, when you are outside — walking to school, or at the beach, or sitting under a tree — stop for a moment and just listen. You might hear the world singing. And maybe you'll remember your part of that song too.

God of creation, thank you for this amazing world — for stars and oceans, for animals and trees, for every breath that reminds us we are alive. Help us to live in a way that joins the world's song of praise, with gratitude, kindness, and care for everything you've made. Amen.
