[00:14] Good morning girls and boys,
[00:16] and blessings to you on this day.
[00:20] Now I've got here in front of me
[00:23] this special box.
[00:26] You might have a look at this box
[00:28] and you can see that it's got, you know, stars
[00:32] that shine on it and it's got kind of gray paper
[00:35] and it looks very special.
[00:38] You know, it's shiny, uh,
[00:40] it's got different colors on it when you put it
[00:42] around in the light.
[00:44] And there it is, there's the box.
[00:47] Now, you might also see here that I've got a basket.
[00:52] And the basket, you know, it,
[00:54] it looks a little bit different, doesn't it?
[00:56] The basket doesn't have, you know, shiny paper on it,
[01:00] it doesn't have stars.
[01:02] Uh, it's kind of got this, this, you know, uh, strange gray
[01:07] or brown kind of color to it, right?
[01:09] And it looks very, very different to the box,
[01:12] which looks all shiny and amazing.
[01:16] Now, in today's Bible story, Jesus
[01:20] tells a parable,
[01:22] and a parable is just a story that kind
[01:24] of has hidden meanings within it.
[01:28] And he tells a story about two people.
[01:31] Now, one of them, alright, is kind
[01:34] of like a minister, kind of like me.
[01:37] And the minister stands up in public
[01:41] and he has all these robes on, and he makes all these loud
[01:45] and long-winded prayers
[01:47] and so forth, you know, in a sense to show everyone
[01:50] that he's very holy, uh, that he's very,
[01:54] very prayerful, all of that.
[01:56] And he stands there so that everyone can see.
[02:00] Then there's another person who is a tax collector.
[02:04] And in Jesus' time,
[02:06] tax collectors weren't really looked on all
[02:08] that well, alright?
[02:10] And he, by contrast comes out
[02:15] and he beats his chest with his hands
[02:18] and he cries out to God
[02:19] and says, Lord, have mercy on me for I'm a sinner,
[02:25] Lord, have mercy on me for I'm a sinner.
[02:29] Now, Jesus tells this story to make a contrast
[02:34] between two different ways of being.
[02:38] We can be like the box, which is shiny
[02:43] and, you know, got all the fancy colors
[02:45] and you know, all the paper and looks pretty good, right?
[02:50] And we can stand out
[02:52] and say, look, look at all the wonderful colors
[02:56] and the wonderful paper, and look how good I am.
[03:00] Look at it all there. Or we can be like the basket,
[03:05] which seems much more humble,
[03:08] but in fact, unlike the box that has a lid on it,
[03:13] so nothing can get in or out
[03:15] because the box is interested in itself.
[03:20] The basket is open
[03:23] and so can receive love, relationship, hope,
[03:28] all of those kinds of things, good things from God.
[03:33] So the box is kind of like the minister in the story.
[03:39] It's, it's looks really good, uh,
[03:43] but it's also closed in that it's proud
[03:47] of its paper and of its color and of its shininess.
[03:51] The basket, which is far more humble,
[03:54] is like the tax collector who isn't looking to be proud
[03:58] but opens himself up to God and says, God have mercy on me.
[04:04] Basically, he's saying, God, I need your love.
[04:08] I need your help. I need your care.
[04:11] And because he's open like the basket
[04:14] and humble like the basket, God can
[04:19] get in and change him and fill him.
[04:23] And so Jesus commends, Jesus says,
[04:28] this is the way that you are to be
[04:30] as you follow after Jesus.
[04:33] Humble, open, not proud and self-seeking,
[04:38] but ready to receive the good things
[04:41] that God has given to us.
[04:46] It's really hard to do sometimes to be open
[04:49] and to be humble, but that's how
[04:53] and when God comes into our lives.
[04:56] And so Jesus tells the story as an encouragement to us,
[05:02] to encourage us to say, be open.
[05:05] Okay? Don't be proud.
[05:07] Don't be kind of self-seeking like the box,
[05:11] like the minister in the story.
[05:14] And you'll receive the good things of God, which begins
[05:17] and ends in God's love that he gives to us in Jesus.
[05:23] So may that bless you today
[05:25] as you continue to follow after him.
[05:28] Amen.
