The Seed That Cracks the Concrete

Cracks in the Footpath

Maybe next time you're walking down the footpath in your town, take a look at all the cracks in the concrete. Do you know what makes those cracks? There are lots of reasons, of course — water, soil, earthquakes. But the most common reason for cracks in a footpath are tree roots.

Deep under the ground, trees are sending their roots, digging slowly through the dirt, pushing and pushing, so that eventually even the thickest and strongest concrete cracks and gives way.

The Power of a Tiny Seed

Isn't it amazing how a tiny little seed — whether it's an oak tree or a eucalyptus tree — can grow so strong and make such a difference? Compared to a concrete path or an asphalt road, the seed seems so weak. But because the seed has life, there is no limit to what it can do.

God's Word at Work

Jesus says that God's word is like that seed. It falls into the ground and seems to disappear. It seems to do nothing. In fact, it seems like it dies. No one can see what the seed is doing.

But over time, God's word grows up and produces more life and more seeds. God's truth and goodness is at work deep in your life, breaking through even the hardest places.

A Reminder Under Our Feet

So maybe every time we step over a crack in the footpath, we can remember that God is at work deep in our hearts — changing us and the whole world through his life.

Just don't step on the cracks. You don't want to break your mother's back!
