Where Do You See God?

Where do you see God in ordinary life or ordinary things? When have you seen a moment of kindness or love or truth? Maybe on the sporting field, around a table, or in a group of people.

I often wonder — what if God turned up not wearing a crown, not on a throne, not dressed up, but in ordinary life? Like on the bus, at the beach, or sitting next to you at school or in the park? That's what happened in the TV show Joan of Arcadia.

The Word Became Flesh

From the Bible, the writer of John says:

"The Word became flesh and lived among us."

Jesus, who lived over 2,000 years ago, pitched his tent among us. He moved into the neighbourhood, right here with us in our lives. They're all ways of saying God was one of us — like the famous song in the 1990s by U.S. singer Joan Osborne.

In fact, the Bible tells us God is in, around, and among us all. If we choose, we can see this in each other. What a mystery.

Finding the Unexpected

It's like the storybook Finding François by Gus Gordon. It's about a little girl who feels lonely. She puts a message into a bottle and throws it into the water off a bridge. Do you know what happens? The bottle floats away, and she finds a friend somewhere else in the world that she never expected. Their friendship grows through letters and cakes and little visits — ordinary things that turn out to be very special.

I love this story because it reminds me that God often shows up in ordinary kindness, in friendship, in sharing, in the little surprises that make life brighter. Just like the girl in the story who found a friend in an unexpected place, we can find God's love in everyday people and moments.

God Is Here

Imagine if Jesus lived in a tent in your backyard, going out to find strugglers, people in need, people ignored by everyone, inviting them to your table for a meal. Wow.

So next time you see someone being kind, or you share a laugh with a friend, or even when you notice something beautiful in nature, you might just whisper, "What if God is here?"

Because God is here — with us, among us, in ordinary life.
